Mintex Rally Yorkshire is the second in what will be a series of events celebrating rallying as it took place in the 1970s and 1980s. If you do not have a period rally car, we have cars available to hire. Alternatively classic cars or supercars may be driven.
Our first event was Lombard Rally Bath in October 2018, the entry list for which filled in just three months. It ran with great acclaim and was thoroughly enjoyed by those taking part.
Mintex Rally Yorkshire will take place from Friday 26th April to Sunday 28th April 2019.
On Saturday 27th we will recreate Rally Stages used on the Mintex Rally in the 1970s and 1980s – Bramham Park, Harewood Hill Climb, Rufforth, Church Fenton Airfield, Bowling Park, amongst others, will be visited. At Church Fenton, now known as Leeds East Airport, three “stages” will be tackled, one some four miles long and the other five. All of the surfaces will be smooth, mostly on tarmac, and they will not be timed. So at no times will competitive speeds need to be reached. A VERY SPECIAL SPECTATOR PACKAGE IS AVAILABLE OVER THE WHOLE OF THE AFTERNOON – PLEASE LOOK AT OUR BLOG FOR DETAILS. LIMITED NUMBERS ONLY WILL BE ABLE TO ACCESS IT. TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED ON EVENTBRITE.
The event will kick off on Friday evening with a traditional rally forum, meet and greet and Buffet Dinner.
During the saturday run, we will have a number of “time controls” where a drink and a snack will be available, lunch will be taken at a local, grand location and you will have time to swap stories during the day.
On Saturday evening, after the tour around the Mintex Rally Stages, there will be a more formal Rally Dinner. This will be attended by all of the participants, plus our featured “star” drivers. A limited number of tickets will be available for the dinner.
THE EVENT WILL BE RAISING FUNDS IN AID OF THE REGISTERED CHARITY THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RUNNING THE YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE.
Mintex Rally Yorkshire will be based at the Principal Hotel in York. The Dinners will take place at the Hotel’s Event Centre and the cars taking part will be displayed outside the Hotel.
We will be joined by Billy Coleman, British Rally Champion driver who drove for the Ford team in the 1970s, a pilot of the iconic Chequered Flag Lancia Stratos, and drove for the Prodrive/Rothmans team in Porsche 911s and BMW M3s, before moving on to Opel; Robin Eyre-Maunsell, works Hillman and Chrysler driver from the 1970s and 1980s; Jill Robinson, paired with her co-driver from the period Pauline Gullick; Louise Aitken-Walker former Ladies World Champion Driver, who will experience an Audi Quattro for the first time, from Ireland legendary tarmac driver Cahal Curley, Mike Wood works co-driver and Terry Harryman co-driver to many works drivers from Paddy Hopkirk to Ari Vatanen over his long career.
All of our featured stars will be around to swap stories about period rallying escapades – dragging crippled cars to finishes of rallies, where they crashed or should have done, victories and failures alike.
What happens when Dai Llewellin and Paul Spooner take part in our events – LOTS OF FUN!!
Finally, thank you to Robert Clayson and Chris Huish for the use of the photographs
