FROM HARROGATE IT STARTED – WE ARE BACK FOR THE 2022 EVENT RUNNING ON THE 8th and 9th APRIL. BASED AT THE CEDAR COURT HOTEL IN HARROGATE, VISITING SOME VENUES NOT USED FOR MANY YEARS ON A RALLY, WITH SOME OF OUR 2019 VENUES AS WELL. ENTRIES ARE NOW OPEN FOR A GREAT WEEKEND OF RALLY ENTERTAINMENT, WATCH OUT FOR OUR STAR DRIVERS AND CARS BEING ANNOUNCED SOON.
Congratulations to all of the entrants to Mintex Rally Yorkshire for making it such a fantastic event in April 2019. It was the second in what will be a series of events celebrating rallying as it took place in the 1970s and 1980s. Our first event was Lombard Rally Bath in October 2018, the entry list for which filled in just three months. It ran with great acclaim and was thoroughly enjoyed by those taking part, the spectator interest in Bath in 2019 was unbelievable and we are proud to have run in 2020 complying with all of the COVID-19 precautions. Mintex Rally Yorkshire 2019 was hailed and now we are working at being even better.
The even better news is that Mintex Rally Yorkshire will run again – now based at the Cedar Court Hotel, in Harrogate. Spectating is recommended at Church Fenton Airfield. A dedicated spectator area will be awaiting you. Gates open at 9.30am and the first cars are due at around 10.00am Three stages will run on the section that you will be able to spectate on.
We will recreate Rally Stages used on the Mintex Rally in the 1970s and 1980s – Church Fenton Airfield and Harewood Hill Climb, in differing configurations during the morning, before moving on to airfield based stages in the afternoon. All of the surfaces will be smooth, mostly on tarmac, and they will not be timed. So at no times will competitive speeds need to be reached. Special spectator packages will be put together over the coming months.
The event will kick off on Friday evening with a traditional rally forum, meet and greet and Buffet Dinner.
During the saturday run, we will have a number of “time controls” where a drink and a snack will be available, lunch will be taken at a local, grand location and you will have time to swap stories during the day.
On Saturday evening, after the tour around the Mintex Rally Stages, there will be a more formal Rally Dinner. This will be attended by all of the participants, plus our featured “star” drivers. A limited number of tickets will be available for the dinner.
THIS YEAR WE RAISED SOME £1,500.00 FOR OUR CHARITY – in AID OF THE REGISTERED CHARITY THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RUNNING THE YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE.
Mintex Rally Yorkshire will be based at the Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate. Cars taking part will be displayed outside the Hotel.
In 2019, at the Principal Hotel in York, we were joined by Billy Coleman, British Rally Champion driver who drove for the Ford team in the 1970s, a pilot of the iconic Chequered Flag Lancia Stratos, and drove for the Prodrive/Rothmans team in Porsche 911s and BMW M3s, before moving on to Opel; also from Ireland, legendary tarmac driver Cahal Curley, Robin Eyre-Maunsell, works Hillman and Chrysler driver from the 1970s and 1980s; Louise Aitken-Walker former Ladies World Champion Driver, who experienced a Toyota Corolla for the first time. WHO WILL JOIN US IN 2022? – We can conform that “Mr 351” – Barry Lee, former works Ford and Nissan/Datsun rally driver, Multiple Hot Rod World Champion and Rallycross star, will drive car number 1 on the event. Yorkshire Legends, Bob Bean and John Midgeley will also join us.
All of our featured stars will be around to swap stories about period rallying escapades – dragging crippled cars to finishes of rallies, where they crashed or should have done, victories and failures alike.
What happens when Dai Llewellin and Paul Spooner take part in our events – LOTS OF FUN!!
Finally, thank you to Robert Clayson and Chris Huish for the use of the photographs
